Saint John's Anglican Church

St. John's is a beautiful church in the heart of Fremantle. As people are unable to enter and appreciate the space unless someone from the parish is there to greet them, I put up my hand in 2022 and became a welcomer. Spending three hours a week on this duty, I took to sharing with visitors the stories of the church and its beautiful stained glass windows.

Word spread and without my knowing the City began advertising these "tours" in its visitor centre. The local media took an interest and the number of visitors kept growing. What started as a way for me to quietly pray each week in a beautiful church with occasional visitors turned into a way to share the love of history and philosophy with curious tourists from from all over the world.

Alongside the tourists, a group of locals regularly pop in for a long conversation. Through this work I've befriended Mark the philosopher, Nicholas the bearded, Chrissie the artist, and countless folk from the U.K., the U.S., China, Philippines, over East, up North, out bush, and all over.

In the centre of Freo (Walyalup Koort) is the beautiful heritage building, St. John's Anglican Church. Among others, this church has two beautiful requests to community: feed the hungry and give drink to the thirsty.

To meet this calling we have a larder, which is usually filled with all sorts of long-life food and drink. When the church doors are open, whomever pleases can come and ask for something to take with them. A member of the parish will give them a bag, open the larder, and let them take as much as they need.

With the cold months approaching, the larder was nearly empty. I made a GoFundMe to raise money to restock the larder. Within a couple of days people had donated enough money to stock the larder three times over! This video is our first round of stocking the larder using the donated funds. To everyone that donated, thank you for making this possible. You're always welcome to pop in for a drink and something to eat.
